PortMiami Plans Major Rail Expansion by 2027
PortMiami is moving forward with a significant expansion of its on-dock rail capabilities, supported by a $16 million federal grant. The project aims to reduce highway congestion while increasing cargo capacity through improved rail connectivity.
PortMiami is advancing plans to substantially expand its rail infrastructure, with completion targeted for 2027, according to Director Hydi Webb. The expansion represents a strategic shift toward reducing highway congestion while boosting the port's cargo handling capacity through enhanced rail connectivity.
The port secured a $16 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's RAISE program in 2022 to support the sustainability-focused expansion. Webb confirmed that the funding will enable increased trackage on port property and upgraded hybrid infrastructure designed to streamline container transfers between rail and other transportation modes.
Rail cargo volumes are projected to multiply as the expansion takes effect, capitalizing on the Florida East Coast Railway system that already connects PortMiami to the national railway network. The FECR system serves PortMiami, Port Everglades, and the Port of Palm Beach, linking to major rail carriers CSX and Norfolk Southern through Jacksonville.
The current rail infrastructure underwent a complete rebuild following Hurricane Wilma's damage in 2005. Miami-Dade County invested $50 million in November 2013 to restore the mainline rail connection, rehabilitate the damaged rail bridge, restore connections to national railway systems, and update the Hialeah rail yard.
PortMiami's rail service provides access to 70 percent of the U.S. population within one to four days of shipping time. Major southeastern markets are accessible even faster, with cargo reaching Orlando in one day, Atlanta and Charlotte within two days, and Memphis and Nashville within three days. Other significant southeastern cities are reachable by rail in 10 hours to three days.
The expansion aligns with broader transportation efficiency goals, offering environmental benefits through reduced emissions compared to truck transport. Webb emphasized the port's commitment to comprehensive connectivity, allowing cargo access through water, truck, and rail transportation modes.
The rail enhancement project represents a critical component of PortMiami's long-term strategy to handle growing cargo volumes while reducing the environmental impact of freight movement. The port's position as a gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean makes efficient inland connectivity increasingly important for maintaining competitiveness in the global shipping market.
Miami-Dade County's investment in rail infrastructure reflects recognition of the port's economic importance to South Florida and its role in supporting regional supply chains. The rail expansion will complement existing port facilities while positioning PortMiami to handle anticipated cargo growth through the remainder of the decade.
